The New York Harbor School integrates New York City’s maritime resources,
culture and history into a challenging curriculum that prepares students for success
in college and in careers in fields such as shipping, oceanography, marine biology,
waterfront development, sewage and water treatment, environmental law,
environmental engineering, hydrology and health. All New York Harbor becomes a
classroom when NHS students board—and learn how to sail—the school’s 125-foot
schooner, the Lettie G. Howard.

the Bahamas, where selected high school sophomores and juniors spend a
semester studying environmental sciences and marine biology.
The American Sail Training Association honored NYHS’s innovative use of the Lettie G. Howard with the Sail Training Education Program of the Year Award.
The NYHS rowing team has successfully competed in Boston’s Youth Open
