In June 2008, SLJ graduated 93% of its first senior class, 100% of whom had applied and been accepted to college. Among the colleges its 2008 graduates attend are Amherst College, Baruch College CUNY, Bates College, Brooklyn College CUNY (Macaulay Honors & Teachers Academy), Colby College, College at New Paltz SUNY, DePauw University, Hamilton College, Skidmore College, Stony Brook University SUNY, Trinity University, University of Maine at Orono, and Wheaton College.
SLJ received an A on the New York City Department of Education's 2008 citywide Progress Report, a definitive assessment of school success based on all available data. SLJ excelled in attendance, graduation, and ninth grade accumulation as compared to its peer horizon, and received extra credit for proficiency gains in closing the achievement gap for minority students.
SLJ was the only unscreened high school in Brooklyn, and one of few in the city to be profiled in the 2007 edition of Clara Hemphill's New York City's Best Public High Schools, a widely read and highly respected guide for parents. Additionally SLJ was twice (June 2005 and June 2008) the focus of an article in the New York Times in praise of its achievements.
SLJ houses a non-profit partner in residence, the Adams Street Foundation (ASF), which delivers broad-based and high-quality enrichment services that include internships, mentorships, extracurricular activities, and pre-college programs, which are staples of more affluent school districts. ASF also offers SLJ students a 9th through 11th grade early college awareness curriculum and differentiated college advising in the 12th grade.
