Students are recruited from four districts (and nineteen zip codes) in Brooklyn, creating a diverse student body representative of the borough.
More than 500 students applied for the 100 places UAAAL's 2008 six grade class.
Dedicated to emerging artists and new work, Mahattan-based theater company Ars Nova works with UAAAL students weekly, exploring a multitude of performance models and exposing students to cutting-edge artists and performances.
Students work with Long Island University professors and students on Making a Legacy, a documentary project recording the founding and growth of UAAAL as an urban public school.
Through our elective program, students have the opportunity to choose from dynamic courses including West African Dance, Martial Arts, Chorus, Yearlong Drama Intensive, Anthropomorphic Sculpture, Drawing with Live Models, Music & Technology, Brooklyn Buckets Drum Line, Basketball, and Tennis.
Over 60% of parents have attended one or more Freestyle Friday evening showcase events.
