Saturday, December 13, 2014 from 9:00am - 2:00pm

Back to event list

The Urban Assembly family of New York City public secondary schools partnered with The JPMorgan Chase Foundation to host a Career & Technical Education (CTE) Symposium. Designed to explore the opportunities and challenges of preparing today's youth for the 21st century economy, the Symposium brought together nearly 200 participants representing stakeholders from the public, private, non-profit and higher education sectors.

Recognized as a leader in Career & Technical Education (CTE), The Urban Assembly has created seven New York City CTE public high schools. In an effort to serve, celebrate and learn from the field, The Urban Assembly hosted their first ever CTE Symposium on Saturday, December 13th. The symposium invited practitioners, experts, policy advisors, funders, and public and private sector leaders to showcase CTE best practices and discuss challenges in a dynamic, participatory conference setting. In addition to remarks by NYC Deputy Mayor Richard Buery and former Assistant Secretary for Career, Technical and Adult Education Dr. Brenda Dann-Messier, guests took part in interactive sessions designed to help them tackle problems, align belief and practice, close resource gaps, and produce actionable strategies for the work ahead. Topics ranged from the CTE policy agenda, developing the CTE teaching force, emerging labor needs, and gender imbalance in the technology sector. Featured experts who will be meeting with participants include leaders from the NYS Education Department, NYC Department of Education, United Federation of Teachers, IDEO, City University of New York, NYS Board of Regents, IBM, New York University, New York City Economic Development Corporation, Control Group and the Partnership For New York City as well as numerous CTE principals and industry partners.
