At 17, Isatou Daffeh is a charismatic and caring young woman, a strong student and an all-star track athlete at the Urban Assembly School for Applied Math and Science, a public high in the South Bronx. Isatou should believe that she can do anything, but she is an African American, Muslim girl growing up in the lowest income congressional district in the United States. She is first generation American, one of seven siblings. Her parents emigrated from Gambia to find better opportunities for their children, but they were accustomed to limited roles for women.
