Partnership between Urban Assembly and Facebook yields powerful opportunities for young women in Brooklyn

All semester long, in a partnership between Facebook, Urban Assembly, and the Urban Assembly Institute of Math and Science for Young Women in Brooklyn, the school's entire 9th grade has embarked on a journey to learn the product development lifecycle (as part of a new computer science pathway) and design solutions to real issues in their community. We have live-streamed with engineers each week with Facebook and created a course that’s the first of its kind in the country that combines technology education, career readiness, and social emotional learning.

In sharing their product pitches, these 9th graders were engaged and thoughtful, used industry jargon and processes with ease, and were able to explain how their SEL skills contributed to group cohesion. The judges were beyond impressed. Students will share their final product pitches next week, and one winning group will be chosen for a trip to California to visit Facebook Headquarters, tour Stanford University's design school and more! We’re so proud of these young women!
